Spencer Daus-Haberle

#2

An instrument so small
Yet capable of stern command
It can will those to obey
With a simple mark

It can come in any hue
Though plain yellow is best
Gaining character as chipped away
Giving its life for words

It can make mistakes
Yet undo them
With a rub, or scratch, or smudge
Leaving careless beginnings undone

It takes the hands of writers
With the style that suits them best
Slanting, small, careless, or neat
Capturing worthy thoughts
