Matthew Singer Poem of 5 Cliches
1. Nature is often the subject of many poems
Such as so much snow collapsing the Metrodome.
Whether it is a haiku, tanka, or free verse,
This topic is such a cliché,
Reading all of these will make you end up in a hearse,
Or at least a trip to the nurse.
2. Love is usually the center of poetry
It provides readers with a mindset that is totally
Obsessed with romance, and how their lives relate.
The search for a lifetime partner, a teammate,
Is ultimately everyone’s goal in life.
The dream, to have a husband or wife.
3. Sports are commonly used in poetic arts
Tales of underdogs always seem to steal the readers’ hearts.
Some however, consist of failure
Such as “Casey at the Bat” by Ernest Thayer.
In this poem the hero falls by way of the K,
And all the readers feel that Casey has had a bad day.
4. Food is regularly used in verse,
Such as the school food, how could it be any worse?
Or maybe at a five-star restaurant,
Possibly at a sit-down in Belmont,
Nourishment is recurrently written about
In poems that may even take a new route.
5. The trope of life is frequently used
But sometimes the words are so deep, the reader is left confused.
People have different theories on life.
Some lives are ended with a knife
Others live long and prosper
Eventually though, they will need to see a doctor.
