To Mike, twin brother of Ike ...

To Mike, twin brother of Ike, the carefree gerbil who belonged to and was loved by my younger brother, but passed away after his head was split open by a wooden shelf while my brother was running with Mike in his hands.

Oh, how untroubled two brothers can be

Scurrying, scuttling, no time to waste

The world is yours; in your cage you are
free

Every cardboard box is perfectly placed

Slowly nibbled at, bit by bit by bit

But, like the inescapable sunset

This corrugated Garden of Eden

        is eaten

                 away

I still hear your screams, and I must admit

When love is too great it becomes a threat

The hand that feeds, is fraught with dismay

One brother alone, alone he must play
