Ambika Jayakumar

A Weight Lifted

She hurries in and out of hallways,

Dodging people, books, doors, everything.

In her hands is a pile of textbooks

And on her shoulders she carries the load of learning

Her back is hunched over, her brow furrowed.

Is she a girl or a harried middle-aged woman?

Still, she rushes around in panic.

When suddenly,

She trips.

Everything she carried falls away from her

And she is left

Alone on the cement

Looking up at an open blue and white sky,

Taunting her.

A call to something bigger.
